Currency & ATM in Nepal

Currency & ATMs in Nepal is a major concern when you are traveling to Nepal, you don’t need to worry about currency exchange in Nepal. You can exchange your currency through money exchange counters, Commercial Banks, and authorized hotels and stores. The exchange rates are fixed by Nepal Rastra Bank. Coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 rupees while paper notes come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000. It will be easier to use Nepalese currency for your personal expenses and shopping as the price tag on local currency.

Major international currencies are easily accepted in most shops and restaurants. Indian currencies and US dollars are also widely accepted all over the cities. We would like to advise you to carry local currency if you are going Trekking or remote parts of villages. They accept only local currency. You might not get any money exchange counters and banks in the mountains and villages.

Major Credit Cards such as Visa, MasterCard, JCB, and American Express, are readily accepted at midrange and better hotels, restaurants, airlines, and major tourist merchants in Kathmandu, Chitwan, and Pokhara. The surcharge might be applicable to pay through your debit and credit cards.

You can use Indian currency denominations below 100 rupees notes all over Nepal. However, 200, 500, and 2000 notes are prohibited by the central bank of Nepal. The exchange rate between Indian currency to Nepal currency is always fixed as INR 100 equivalent to NPR 160.00
