Idea of Tipping in Nepal
Is Tipping compulsory in Nepal? Most Travellers have a question about tipping. Tipping is quite common in the tourism and hospitality industry. It is an extra expense from your pocket. You want to give to the service provider when you are happy/satisfied with their services. Like in other countries; in Nepal also tips are taken as a token of love and as a gesture of satisfaction from the guests. Nepali people are quite friendly by nature and they are self-expressive. Most of the clients return with satisfaction and promise to come back again. Because of the friendly nature of guides, local people, and hotel crews, your travel becomes quite enjoyable. Due to all these factors, the service providers get good tips from the clients.
However, tips are not mandatory and it is nobody can force you to give tips. Everybody will have a different answer if you ask how much offer tips. The service providers also never ask for tips because it is the only clients who decide whether to give or not to give tips to them. But in most instances, the service providers, Your tour/trekking guide/porters/drivers expect tips from the clients though they do not ask verbally from the client.
Usually, tips are given to those persons who are directly involved in your service. To name; trekking guides, hotel staff, drivers, and other trekking attendants who assist you in carrying your luggage and other kinds of stuff are supposed to get tips.

How much shall I give for tips?
Though there is no specification of the amount, tipping a small amount of money would harass the receiver rather than appreciation. Therefore, it is recommended to give at least Rupees 100 which is less than USD 1.00 to the bell boy or cleaning lady. The number of tips may differ from the nature of the services. Some guests do give tips for more than 10% of their total travel package.
