Currency Exchange & ATM facilities

Due to modern technology, traveling is more convenient than ever in terms of carrying currency for daily food, stay, and shopping expenses. When you are traveling to Nepal, you don’t need to worry about carrying currency and to exchange to local Nepalese currency. Nepal has Nepal Currency and ATM facilities, so you can exchange your currency through money exchange counters, Commercial Banks, and authorized hotels and grocery stores. Daily exchange rates are fixed by the Nepal Rastra Bank ( Central Bank of Nepal). The exchange rate fluctuates from time to time. Under the present system, the open market exchange rates quoted by different banks may differ.

Major currencies are accepted in Nepal

You can exchange US Dollar, British Pound, Euro, Swiss Franc, Australian Dollar, Canadian Dollar, Singapore Dollar, Japanese Yen, Hong Kong Dollar, Danish Krone, Swedish Krona, Saudi Riyal, Qatari Rial, United Arab Emirates Dirham, Thai Baht, Malaysian Ringgit, Chinese Yuan, South Korean Won easily. Coins have come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 rupees, while paper note comes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000. However, you will get hardily 1 & 2 rupees note.

Denominations of Nepal currency

It will be easier to use Nepalese currency for your personal expenses and shopping, as the price tag is given in local currency. We accept major international currencies, which can be used in most shops and restaurants. Indian currency and US dollars are also widely accepted all over the cities. We would like to advise you to carry local Nepalese currency if you are going trekking in the Himalayas or remote parts of villages. They accept only local currency. You may not get any money from exchange counters or banks in the mountains and villages.

Nowadays, you don’t need to walk around carrying many wads of cash in your pocket. Major Credit Cards, such as Visa, MasterCard, JCB, and American Express, are readily accepted at mid-range and higher hotels, restaurants, airlines, and major tourist merchants in Kathmandu, Chitwan, and Pokhara. The surcharge may be applicable when paying with your debit or credit card. We accept international debit or credit cards for payment with an additional 4% bank charge.


Foreign exchange rate as of 25 Dec 2025

You can find an ATM in all major cities and on the highway. You can draw local currency through your credit or Debit card. ATMs in Nepal usually limit the amount of cash you can take out per day. The withdrawal limit per transaction is NPR 20,000 (approx. USD 170) and the single-day limit is 60000 (Approx. USD 500). Please note that the local bank will charge about USD 5 per transaction as a bank service charge for each withdrawal.  

Automated Teller Machine ( ATM Booth)

As India is a close neighboring country of Nepal, Indians can use their currency denominations below 100 rupee notes all over Nepal. However, 200, 500, and 2000 notes are prohibited by the Central Bank of Nepal. The exchange rate between Indian currencies to Nepal currency is fixed at INR 100, equivalent to NPR 160.00. Most of the Indian debit and credit cards can be used with some limitations. Please contact us for more details.
