Things you can do in Kathmandu

Namaste everyone! Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal. It is also a historic city and rich in culture and heritage with many UNESCO world heritage sites. When you step into Kathmandu city, It will make you feel like you are back in prehistoric times. You would be surprised to know that Kathmandu is always an amazing city for new travelers. Tourists travel to Nepal for multiple trekking experiences and to take the best view of Mt.Everest however, Kathmandu offers more interesting and many amazing things to do, to see, or visit other than some fantastic treks like Everest Base-camp trek, Annapurna basecamp Trek, Langtang Trek. Let’s take a look at more awesome things to do in Kathmandu during your visit to Nepal.

Aarati Darshan at the Pashupatinath Temple: Pashupatinath is a Hindu Temple with brilliant pagoda architecture. Every evening the priests perform the Aarati next to the Bagmati River just opposite the main Temple. The evening prayer is quite energetic, and the entire crowd participates in it by chanting, singing, and dancing. The best time to go to the Aarati is at about 6.00 PM. It’s the most wonderful experience for anyone to visit here. It is a remarkable and interesting ritual conducted at Pashupatinath Temple.

Food and branded shopping at Durbar Marg: Durbar Marg is the most happening street in Kathmandu. The Royal Palace Museum is located at Durbarmarg. Most of the shops sell internationally branded outfits, shoes, and associates. It’s an attractive lane with many rooftop cafes and multi-cuisine restaurants offering many international recipes. It is definitely less crowded than the Thamel market. You will also find casinos, Bars, and Nightclubs there. This street never sleeps with full security.

Enjoy the Boudhanath round: Boudhanath Stupa is one of the famous Stupa listed in world heritage sites. It is similar to Swayambhunath, but it’s giant than Swyambhunath. Boudhanath stupa is surrounded by a shopping area, selling many handicrafts and Buddhist styles. It has beautiful architecture, magnificent paintings, and exquisite handicrafts. You will also find some excellent stupa-view rooftop restaurants where you can sit and take a better appearance of Boudhanath. The Boudhanath square is also home to a lot of monks and devotees who spend most of their time close to the Stupa.

Discover the Kathmandu Durbar Square and Kumari Ghar: Kathmandu Valley has three Durbar Squares. The Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the Patan Durbar Square, and the Kathmandu Durbar Square. Kathmandu Durbar Square also called Basantapur Durbar Square is centrally located. The massive earthquake that came back in 2015 damaged a few parts of Durbar Square. However, it is in the renovation process but its beauty is unbroken. It’s home to a lot of pigeons just wandering over the entire area.  Just in front of the square, you will find an old royal palace of the former Kathmandu kingdom and the Kumari Ghar. Kumari is the living goddess of Nepal who stays in the Kumari Ghar and is worshipped by both Hindus and Muslims and is hardly seen in public.

View Kathmandu city from the Swayambhunath top: Swayambhunath stupa is a Buddhist temple in Kathmandu. It is almost similar to Boudhanath Stupa. Swayambhunath is one of the most glorious, holiest, and oldest Stupa in the world. It is located on a small hillock in west Kathmandu hence commanding an excellent view of the valley. The stupa was built in 460 A.D. by King Manadeva, It is also known as the monkey temple, and the reason behind its whole area is surrounded by monkeys. They are considered to be holy and don’t harm anyone who wants to reach the Stupa, a dome-shaped building erected as a Buddhist shrine. So you need to climb 365 steps, almost a kilometer to reach the top where the Stupa is. Once you are there, you can see the entire Kathmandu city.

Swayambhunath is like a small world uphill where you will witness some beautiful architecture, magnificent paintings, exquisite handicrafts, and friendly locals. Believers usually take a round of the stupa spinning the prayer wheels. The Swayambhunath Complex is calm and peaceful with a mesmerizing city view.

Enjoy the nightlife at Thamel: The most happening place in Kathmandu, Thamel is a complete marketplace where you will find handicrafts, apparel, souvenirs, local food, bars & pubs, and friendly people. Thamel is open almost 24 Hrs in a day and even at 3 am in the morning you will hear live music in Pubs & discos. Youngsters partying all night. It’s amusing to be there, and that’s the reason Thamel is the top favorite place of travelers. Another big reason is be if you love collecting souvenirs and handicrafts, grab a lot of variety from the Thamel market.

Local shopping at the Ason market: Ason market is located between Thamel and Kathmandu Durbar Square and is an excellent place to pass through if you walk towards Kathmandu Durbar Square. It is the oldest market in Kathmandu Valley. It has many mixed shops where you can shop a lot of cheap and authentic things including, apparel, footwear, handicrafts, utensils, souvenirs, snacks sari, Bengals, and much more There is nothing you cannot find in the Ason market. Apart from shopping, you can see many old houses built many years back in Newari style. Many temples and stupas are also found in the Ason area.
